Be a Part of Royal Festivities in City of Palaces – Dasara Festival, Mysore

Exhilarating festivities in the city, performances of artists, captivating parade of caparisoned elephants, dazzling fireworks. If there's one thing that can match and befit the grandeur and opulence of the city of Mysore (in South Indian state of Karnataka), it is the magnificence that descends upon it with the festivities of the Hindu festival of Dussehra (Dasara).

Symbolizing the victory of good in the form of Lord Rama over the evil represented by the demon king Ravana, this festival is of a great religious and social significance in Hindu-majority country of India and is celebrated with great fervor across the country. Hence, visiting India at the time of Dussehra is really tantamount to treating oneself to a great, colorful, and spirited social life and culture of India.

Talking of the celebrations in Mysore, there is simply a lot for a tourist to cover it all. The breathtakingly beautiful Mysore Palace is the place to be at as it showcases charming architecture which is said to be a brilliant manifestation of a blend of Hindu, Muslim, Rajput, and Gothic styles of architecture. It also hosts the Dasara festival in quite a scintillating fashion.

The sight of the charismatic palace in the nighttime, when it is illuminated with thousands of bulbs, is an absolute delight if you are a shutterbug. The city's culture comes to a full swing at the palace as leading artists perform in the palace's large gardens.

The surreal highlight of the festivities is a spectacular parade that is organized on the tenth day of the festival. The colorful parade showcases caparisoned elephants among which the principal is the one that carries the main deity of the Mysore City. The procession, which makes its way through the city slowly, really captures everyone's imagination with its beautiful tableaux. Subsequently, a torch light parade begins following which the night sky is lit up with an exhilarating display of fireworks.

So if you are planning to explore the charming spots of South India in October, do make sure to reserve a date with this city of palaces when its magic really comes alive.

Diwali celebrated with great enthusiasm and happiness in Northern and Central India

Diwali is one of the biggest festival of Hindus, celebrated with great enthusiasm and happiness in India.

Ubiquitous festivities, Lights and fireworks, and liveliest public spaces Francis Bacon, a English philosopher, said: "In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present." For those who may not know, Bacon's 16th century words come true every year, quite literally, in the holy land of India.

Diwali, as the most widely celebrated festival of the Hindus is called, is simply and yet so overwhelmingly a "festival of lights." Its religious, spiritual, and social significance illustrates the ultimate win of the light over the darkness, good over evil, knowledge and wisdom over ignorance, and hope and optimism over despair and pessimism.

Fixed each year between October-November as per the Hindu calendar, it falls on the darkest, new moon night of a month of Kartik. So, all is really set for Bacon's concept of innate rivalry between the light and the darkness.

The sight of festivity-filled homes lit bright with celebration lights and little oil lamps, the vibrancy that exudes from people's tittle-tattles, the vivid colors of sweets, gifts, and new clothes that people wear that suddenly pervade public spaces, and of course the inimitable spectacles of fireworks that overwhelm the skies - all this really makes the time around Diwali to be one of the best times to visit India. Falling in the colder seasons of this generally hot and humid country, Diwali simply makes it much easier for a tourist to enjoy every aspect of it.

Perhaps a smarter way to witness this spectacular festival is to make it a part of your pursuit to see some of the most culturally-rich places in India. For example, you can plan a trip to Delhi, Jaipur and Agra around the Diwali time and be a witness to all the shine and glitter that dawns upon these places with the advent of Diwali. Howsoever you may design it, an experience of Diwali is inarguable one of the best that the incredible India has to offer.
